19:00 – 21:00 Opening Keynote: “Examining Therapeutic Recreation Practice Models Through the Lens of Ethnicity” Rodney B. Deiser, Ph.D.
In therapeutic recreation, there are a number of practice models that guide services. Practice models provide a framework for selecting, sequencing, and organizing TR interventions. The five most common practice models in therapeutic recreation are: the leisure ability model, the health protection/health promotion model, TR service delivery/TR outcome model, self-determination and enjoyment enhancement model, and the optimizing lifelong health through TR model. This keynote address will explain the basic assumptions of each model, outlining their strengths and weakness, and will outline which models work better for people from different ethnic backgrounds.
